IXION’S IN-HOUSE TECHNOLOGIES

MONITORING & CONTROL

The development of Monitoring & Control Systems for infrastructures is one of IXION’s main business lines. We count with more than 15 years of experience in the industrial and aerospace sectors, specially due to our work with the European Space Agency (ESA). Our mission is to deliver increasingly intelligent and autonomous systems, which are able to carry out safe operations, without any mistakes of the managed resources. It includes infrastructure monitoring and control (energy plants, building management), specialized systems in satellite-tracking management and data reception in ground stations.
IXION develops advanced M&C systems with the aim of easening and lessening the workload of the employees responsible of the operations and the maintenance of the infrastructure, setting them free from routinary, complex or risky jobs. In order to achieve this, we pursue the maximum level of automation in its management. Moreover, our solution is based on an integral concept of the surveillance tasks, so not only does this allow us to deal with monitoring tasks in the plant instrumentation, but also with infrastructure surveillance tasks (security) and the inspection of its general status. Our aim is to facilitate and automate the maintenance work as much as it is possible.

ADVANCED HMI

The development of user interfaces (HMI) is one of IXION’s areas of expertise, since this is a critical element of the surveillance and control applications, on the one hand, and of the control and unmanned-vehicle operations on the other hand.

Specifically, IXION has dealt with the existing difficulties in the interactions between the operator (or operators) and the highly automated or autonomous systems (human-automation-interaction).

Another goal is to achieve the development of generic components that can be adapted to different problems by parametrization processes, obtained through configuration files, thus optimizing the development cycles. In this way, for instance, we have made possible that the HMI components of the M&C systems for power plant management can be common to those in charge of the management of antennas and satellite-tracking stations. In the same way, the operation station is also common to all kinds of unmanned vehicles -aerial, land and underwater- such as multirotor UAS, fixed-wing UAS, UGV or AUV.

COMPUTER VISION SYSTEMS

IXION’s computer vision team develops innovative applications for complex needs, such as monitoring and inspection of industrial facilities, guidance of a multirotor during its landing, object recognition and evaluation of its status, classic surveillance applications (intrusion), field analysis, underwater structure tracking, etc.
Our vision department works with different devices to reach these applications: visible spectrum cameras, IR cameras for applications based on temperature studies (hot-point detection, field analysis applied to agriculture, etc.), acoustic devices (sonars) for underwater applications, etc.
The wide range of applications and sensors we are involved with, enable the use and development of algorithms and techniques that put together all the spectrum of computer vision: from algorithms that can be included in traditional methods, to less traditional techniques that belong to the artificial intelligence field more than to the computer vision field . In order to point out some examples, there are techniques based on Viola-Jones’ studies, HaarCascades, HOG algorithms for object detection, Bag Of Words type part detectors, Harris type point detectors, Shi-Tomassi, Houhg line detectors, Gabor filters for texture analysis, etc. In addition, we use vector support machines, preceptors, dimensionality reductions, etc.

CONTROL & NAVIGATION

IXION develops navigation systems that enable our vehicles to carry out tasks with a high level of autonomy. These systems are based on advanced sensor systems that perceive the environment (passive and active optic sensors, laser, radar and ultrasound).
This is fused with inertial data and is complemented with information proceeding from the GPS and GIS, when available, with the object of reaching a secure and reliable navigation.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

We work with sophisticated algorithms to integrate a certain level of intelligence into our unmanned vehicles. To fulfill this aim, we have developed different techniques and multidisciplinary knowledge that let us obtain, in an effective way, a group of programs and innovative algorithms in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

ESTIMATION, LOCALIZATION AND SIMULATION

Our unmanned vehicles are equipped with a solid proprioceptive capacity, which provides them with information, related with their internal status and their interaction with other elements in the operations scenario: localization, cinematic, obstacles.
The raw data given by the sensorics of the vehicle are processed with information-fusion and estimation techniques, which take advantage of their synergies and complementarities to obtain a better exploitation of the information. These techniques allow the combination of detailed models of the behavior and the physics of the vehicle, and the sensorial information, to reach a precise, robust and stable estimation of its status.
We use an ample variety of Bayesian filtering techniques, from simple formulations (like Kalman Complementary Filters), to Sigma-Point techniques (as UnscentedKalmanFilter), as well as Monte Carlo methods such as the particle filter.
Our sensors are subjected to data and statistical analysis to characterize their error models (systematic deviations, precision, Allan variance), thus determine the calibration procedures and parameters.

ON BOARD SYSTEMS

IXION’s On-board Systems Department has a HW/SW development area which consists of a multidisciplinary team of engineers with extensive experience in the development of high-performance processing HW and in the development of real-time SW, having developed and integrated the processing systems and on-board SW in IXION’s different platforms. We design the electronics and we deploy the on-board software.
The hardware infrastructure is the set of all chips or devices that form the platform. IXION has a large catalog with a wide variety of options to choose among different chips, thus providing different processing architectures for the same use case. In addition, IXION specializes in designing platforms with single or multiple architectures (heterogeneous architectures) that are based on microcontrollers, FPGAs, or GPUs.
The software infrastructure is the set of drivers, applications, modules and operating system that runs the platform. From a BSP (Board Support Package) generated from the hardware infrastructure, IXION has a variety of possibilities to manage the system, standing out the use of real-time operating systems, the use of Linux-based operating systems, or other ad-hoc systems generated by IXION’s experts.
Combining these infrastructures, IXION has a variety of possibilities to provide the best solutions to our customers.

ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS

IXION works to obtain an embedded system, automotive-qualified and highly configurable for Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) markets, as well as for Highly Automated Driving (2-4 NHTS levels).

Through the combination of the latest Hardware/Software co-design techniques and a high level configuration software tool, easily usable and with high scalability, we intend to give a unique solution to the challenge of the intelligent fusion of heterogeneous information from a high number of proprioceptive and exteroceptive sensors. To do this, functional elements of localization, perception, situation awareness and risk assessment will be combined in a very clear way for the user. This will be done using a probabilistic and “sensor-agnostic” approach, and will generate Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) functions, optimized and adaptable to the client’s needs and constraints.
